Privacy Policy

1. What this policy covers
This policy explains what information Recess collects, why, who can see it and the choices you have. We wrote it to match how the app works today.
2. What we collect
- Your school email address, used to verify that you belong to a campus and to send you sign-in codes.
- Your password, which is stored by our sign-in provider as a one-way hash. We cannot read it.
- Your username and, if you add one, your profile photo.
- What you post and do in the app: posts, comments, replies, likes, saves, listings, events you create or follow, messages about listings, reports, blocks and your notification choices.
- The classes you add to your timetable: class name, days, start and end time, room, professor and color.
- Photos and videos you choose to attach. The app only receives the files you pick; it does not browse your photo library.
- Technical information our hosting providers log to run and protect the service, such as IP address, device type, app version and error records.
- On your phone: a sign-in token kept in secure storage, and reminders for events you saved, which are scheduled on the phone itself.
- If you allow notifications: a notification token that identifies your phone to Apple's push service, kept with your account only to deliver the notifications you chose. You can switch them off in Notifications > Settings or in your phone's settings.
3. What we do not collect
- No advertising or tracking identifiers, and no advertising or analytics services in the app today.
- No precise location, contacts, microphone or camera access.
- We do not sell your information.
4. How we use it
- To run Recess: show the right content to the right campus, deliver messages and notifications, and keep your settings.
- To make adding classes quicker, by suggesting classes other students of your campus have already entered.
- To keep people safe: handle reports, enforce the Guidelines, prevent spam and abuse, and protect accounts.
- To fix problems and keep the service reliable.
5. Who can see what
- Other students of your campus can see your posts, comments, listings and events. Under your username they see your username and photo; in the anonymous space they see neither.
- Anonymous means hidden from other students, not from us: our systems link each post to its account so we can handle abuse. Only the people running Recess, in the course of safety work, can see that link.
- Your timetable is private: other students cannot open it or see that a class is yours. To help classmates fill in their own timetable, a class you add (its name, days, time, room and professor only) can be offered to other students of your campus as a suggestion while they type, without your name, photo or any other detail about you. Students you have blocked, or who have blocked you, are not offered your classes.
- The other person in a listing chat can see the messages you send them. People who have blocked you, or whom you have blocked, cannot see each other's content.
- Your school does not get access to your account or content because of the app.
6. Who else handles your information
We use service providers to host the app and its database and to send sign-in emails. They process information only to provide those services to us.
We may share information with your school, emergency services or the authorities when someone may be in danger, or when the law requires it.
7. How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account exists. Deleting your account in Me removes your account and the content linked to it. Photos and videos are no longer linked to anyone or shown to anyone after that, and are cleared from storage as part of routine clean-up. Reports and safety records about conduct may be kept for a limited time when needed for safety or legal reasons.
8. Your choices
- Edit or delete your posts, listings and events, change your username and photo, and change your password in Me.
- Choose which notifications you get in Notifications > Settings.
- Block people and report content at any time.
- Delete your account in Me. Ask us if you want a copy of your information or have another privacy request.
9. Security
We protect your information with access controls on the database, private file storage, encrypted connections and limits on what staff can see. No service is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password and keep it private.
10. Age
Recess is for college students and is not meant for anyone under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has an account we will remove it.
11. Changes and contact
We will update this policy when our practices change and tell you in the app about important changes.
If Recess is later run by a company, your information stays covered by this policy and moves only to that company. We will tell you in the app first.
